My Other War Story:
This isn't about the time my compound was attacked by a suicide bomber.
It's actually a story of my personal attack on my own health.
The time, 2009. The place, Ramadi, Iraq.
It was Operation Iraqi Freedom...My second rodeo.
Prior to this deployment, I had a proud track record of consistently outperforming Soldiers in physical fitness tests.
More importantly, I had always been a health conscious eater, from my teenage years, all through my military career.
What happened to me this time in Iraq was completely different.
A perfect storm of worry, uncertainty, stress, and hyper-vigilance had plagued me.
This psychosocial phenomena, unbeknownst to me, had dictated my diet.
So for about a year on this deployment, day in and day out, I was on the sugar-nicotine-caffeine diet.
Yes...my mental state hi-jacked my physical state.
My poor nutrition and self-destructive health behaviors became the daily norm.
Although it got me through deployment, it was surely a path to physical destruction.
I often wonder, how many of us are still on this type of diet induced by mental states that we're not conscious of?
Today, equipped with a Master's Degree in Nutrition Education and my personal experiences, I've spoken to thousands of Servicemembers, Military Spouses, and Veterans about this paradox.
The paradox of having the skill to be healthy & fit and a complete inability to apply any of it.
It's the typical case of a Knowledge-Action Gap.
As you know, this issue isn't limited to the military and public safety populations.
However, national security and public safety are two critical areas that rely on a physically fit and ready force.
If you're a Military Commander or Public Safety Leader, I want to support your mission.
If my personal story resonates with you, please drop me a line today to begin the discussion of creating a healthier force.
